Not knowing what else to do, Lucy ducked back behind the counter and answered the phone. It was Snuffy.

"Hi Lucy! Did anything happen recently?" she asked cheerfully.

"Yeah, I'm safe though. I'm holed up in the coffee shop and there are people protecting me."

"Wait, what? I meant did anything happen between you and Leon." She paused for a moment. "ARE THOSE GUNSHOTS?!"

"It's ok, those are from Leon! He's killing the monsters."

"MONST– oh god, what the hell is happening over there?"

"I'm not sure, something about Rachmaninov's toxin spreading and turning people into tentacle monsters. I wasn't really paying attention."

"Rachmaninov? You mean the extremely wealthy family in town that owns a pharmaceutical company?"

"Yeah, we already established that plot point. No need to repeat it."

"Oh no. Lucy, I'm so sorry."

"Why are you sorry? And why did you call me to ask about Leon?"

"I uh... I may have accidentally stolen a vial of something from the Rachmaninovs and on purpose injected it into the guy."

"WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU DO THAT?!"

"To help you with Leon! I've been trying to set you two up for weeks, did you really think him showing up at the pizza shop was an accident? I suggested that place because I knew he always ate there. But nothing I tried would work! So I went with the nuclear option and gave a meth head what I thought was some super drug and led him to the coffee shop, expecting him to cause a ruckus and have Leon save you."

"That... sounds like a plan you would come up with."

"But he did actually save you, right?"

"Well yeah, but now we're in mortal danger!"

"Even better! He's sure to fall for a classic damsel in distress. Go throw yourself in front of one of the monsters and have him rescue you."

"I'm not THAT stupid. The tentacle monsters might uh, might... hmm maybe that's not so bad. Ok, I'll try it."

"Atta girl. I'll fetch my shotgun and provide backup if needed."

Lucy ended the call and looked up to see how Leon was doing. He and Sally were fighting off monsters, saying cool one-liners, and performing action movie stunts as they fought off the tentacle monsters. It would have made for a really cool scene to focus on instead of the conversation with Snuffy. Oh well.

All was not going well, however. She noticed one monster had managed to sneak around the back, unnoticed by the gunslinging duo. She could easily lie on the floor in front of it and scream for help. Lucy's eyes shined with determination as she stepped forward.
